Anagnorisis is an American post-black metal band from Louisville, Kentucky. Originally active from 2003 to 2016, the band resurfaced behind the scenes in 2024 to begin work on new material. Known for their deeply personal, introspective, and theatrical approach to extreme metal, Anagnorisis explores themes of childhood trauma, depression, grief, and self-reflection.
The band gained significant domestic and international attention with its second and third full-length albums, Beyond All Light (2013) and Peripeteia (2016). Following a limited run of tour dates supporting Peripeteia and the departure of longtime keyboardist Sam Hartman, Anagnorisis entered an extended hiatus that ultimately lasted eight years.
In 2023, frontman Zachary Kerr began developing new material under the moniker Caregriever, a solo project conceived as an outlet for processing the emotional and physical exhaustion of serving as a full-time caregiver to his now-late father-in-law. Reconnecting with longtime creative partner and Anagnorisis guitarist Zak Denham, the pair began shaping the material into something larger than a solo endeavor. What started as Caregriever gradually evolved into the foundation of Anagnorisis's fourth full-length album.
The new material was subsequently shared with longtime bandmates Josh Mumford (bass) and Cody McCoy (drums), reuniting the core lineup and setting the stage for the band's return. Recording sessions for Caregriever began in the summer of 2024, marking the first new Anagnorisis material in nearly a decade.
